Understanding

Financial planning explained

letterhead

It’s important to have a financial planner who takes the time to understand where you are in life, where you want to get to and most importantly what lifestyle you want to enjoy. The skill of a Lifestyle Financial Planner is understanding your goals and desires and keeping you on track to achieve them.

Step 1: Understanding what’s important to you

We work with you to clearly identify your aspirations, then prioritise and plan for how you can achieve them. We do this by creating a priority matrix, like the one below, to put your goals in perspective and decide their relative importance.

Step 2: Creating a plan for your life

Having clarity on your goals will change the way you think about your finances before it’s too late. Having a financial plan based on a robust analysis of what you want to achieve in life is the bedrock on which you can make changes to your working, spending and investing decisions. Taking a wider view of your wealth, planning your finances and documenting a plan makes you more committed and likely to stick to it whilst there is still time to do so.

Step 3: Implementing the plan

We will then put together the ‘nuts and bolts’ of what you need to do to achieve your goals. This may involve making changes to your spending, pensions, savings, investments, insurance and mortgages. Whatever you need to do, we’ll take care of the detail and make sure you stay on track with regular check-ins.

Step 4: Dealing with challenges

There are many challenges which can crop up in life and it’s important that you stick to your plan or modify it if necessary. That’s why financial planning is an annual process, not a one-time event.

What is a Lifestyle Financial Planner?

A Lifestyle Financial Planner is different from a financial adviser, as we take time to thoroughly understand your goals and keep you on track to achieve them as a:

  • Coach: making sure you get started and have a financial life plan
  • Navigator: continually guiding you through potentially difficult times
  • Protector: protecting your wealth by aiming to minimise tax and maximise the potential for wealth growth

We tell you the truth at all times; and often what you need to hear, rather than what you want to hear. Changing input is the only way to change the output.
